EDDY STRIKES THE POINTS FOR THE LILYWHITES

South West Peninsula League
AFC ST AUSTELL 3 IVYBRIDGE TOWN 2

Every year whilst on holiday I seem to end up watching AFC St Austell and they always seem to serve up a good match and this was no exception. On arrival, we were greeted by the Lilywhites Manager Phil Lafferty before I spoke to Peter Beard who has been with the club many a year but has recently stepped down as club secretary, though he is still doing a lot at the club.

Took my position at pitchside and was joined by local Cornish Football Guru Dave Deacon and his wife who spent the first half in my company and I also paid up my subscription to his magazine Cornish Soccer, which can be found on this LINK

The game kicked off and both teams looked very even both having good chances, before in the 7th minute LIAM EDDY put St Austell in to a early lead. Towards the half hour, the homesters began to get the upper hand and after 35 minutes LIAM EDDY doubled his and his clubs tally to make it 2-0, maybe this was game over, but Ivybridge to their credit never gave up and battled hard and got back in to the game just before half time.

The Second Half kicked off and I went and sat in the stand, Ivybridge pushed forward and looked for periods the better side though AFC had a lot of chances but you had a sense that Ivybridge would pull themselves back in to this game and on 67 minutes they did exactly that and got back on levels terms.

Both teams then went for three points on offer and there were some very good chances missed by both. In last seasons fixture, St Austell won it in the final minute, could history repeat it self, the answer was to be yes, as a free kick came in to the area, then wasn't cleared by the away defence before coming out to LIAM EDDY who volleyed the ball in to the bottom corner of the net for the winner, to send a crowd of 196 home happy(well at least the home fans of course!)

A lovely club that is well worthy of a visit, infact they kick off the SWPL Groundhop on Thursday 24th March 2016 when they host local rivals St Blazey with a 7.45pm kick off that evening.
